Motif magazine s range of editorial interests was unusually broad for its time and, in the often highly segmented world of periodical publishing, it has rarely been equalled in Britain.

By Rick Poynor Zembla Published in Eye no. 51 vol. 13 (text in full) It was good to see the appearance of the second issue of Zembla. It gave hope that this audacious new literary magazine might actually last. Reactions to the first issue from the press and ordinary readers were encouraging.

You don't have to like everything in it (not even its editor/designer, Rudy VanderLans claims to do that) to find it quite simply the most stimulating publication of its kind. For the doomsayers, of course, Emigre epitomises everything that is wrong with typography today.

Is Australia s global cultural impact reflected in its graphic design? Seen from afar, Australia has always been an unknown territory when it comes to graphic design. Few Australian names are well known outside the country.

The HTML page, with its lack of fixity, was anathema to designers who had been raised in print-media and were accustomed to having near-total control over the end result.
